GRISWOLD & GUNNISON FIRST MODEL CONFEDERATE REVOLVER.36 caliber, six shot cylinder, 7-1/2 in. dragoon type round barrel with round barrel housing, worn down brass pin front sight, brass frame, trigger guard, and backstrap, one piece walnut grip, safety pins on rear of cylinder between nipples, serial number "1252" under barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, and on side of cylinder, secondary number "22" on the barrel wedge and loading lever flat, stamped "Y" under barrel behind barrel stud and next to safety pin on cylinder, Roman numeral benchmark "XVIII" on grip strap, 13 in. overall
Note: These revolvers were manufactured in the South by Samuel Griswold, a transplant from Connecticut. He first produced pikes for the Confederacy and the success of that relationship led to the production of this revolver. Manufacturing was located in Griswoldville, Georgia from 1862 to 1864. A second model was produced with flats on the barrel lug. There are thought to have been about 3,700 pistols produced. The factory was destroyed by Union forces in November of 1864. This revolver is of the Colt Model 1851 Navy type. This is one of approximately 350 or so documented survivors.

Condition:
gray patina with oxidation and pitting to barrel, oxidation to interior of barrel, dent to left side of loading rod, other minor signs of handling, oxidation with some pitting and handling marks on barrel lug, loss of wedge screw, gray patina to cylinder with some pitting, loss of one safety pin on back of cylinder, loss to half of one of the nipples on cylinder, oxidation to interiors of cylinder, brass components with some toning, handling wear, and minor dents, mainspring broken in half but broken piece is present, wooden grip with chips to both lower front edges, small loses on bottom of grip adjacent to backstrap for possible lanyard, cylinder will rotate, barrel wedge takes effort to manipulate
